Event: NSQF Industrial & Cultural Field Visit Streams: Automobile & Retail Route: Kanakapura ➔ Channapatna ➔ Mysore ➔ KRS Backwaters ➔ Kanakapura Duration: 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM

Introduction: Bridging the Gap Between Classroom and Reality

At Government PU (Ex-Municipal) College, Kanakapura, we believe that vocational education (NSQF) is incomplete without witnessing the real-world application of skills. Textbooks can explain how an engine works or how a supermarket is managed, but seeing it with your own eyes changes everything.

With this vision, our Automobile and Retail students embarked on an action-packed one-day educational trip. The objective was simple: to trace the evolution of automotive engineering and to understand modern retail management, while also soaking in the rich heritage of our state.

7:00 AM: The Journey Begins

The day began bright and early. At 7:00 AM, our campus was buzzing with energy as students from both streams gathered, ready for the journey. With the blessings of our Principal and the guidance of our faculty, the bus rolled out of Kanakapura, filled with laughter and anticipation.

Stop 1: Breakfast at Kengal Hanumanthaiah Temple, Channapatna

Our first halt was at the historic Kengal Anjaneya Swamy Temple in Channapatna. Before diving into the technical aspects of the day, we started with a spiritual connection.

  • Community Bonding: Students and teachers sat together for a wholesome breakfast in the temple premises. This shared meal fostered a sense of unity and discipline among the students, setting a positive tone for the rest of the day.

Stop 2: Payana Vintage Car Museum (The Automobile Classroom)

Learning Focus: Automotive History, Design Evolution, and Mechanics

Located on the Mysore-Bangalore highway, Payana is not just a museum; it is a time capsule of automotive history. For our Automobile students, this was nothing short of paradise.

  • Evolution of Engineering: Students witnessed the drastic transformation of vehicle technology—from the rudimentary engines of the early 20th century to the sleek designs of the 70s and 80s.

  • Design & Aesthetics: They observed how aerodynamics and chassis design have evolved over decades.

  • Mechanical Insight: Seeing the exposed engines and suspension systems of vintage cars helped students understand the foundational mechanical principles that modern hybrid and EV cars (which they study in our Toyota lab) are built upon.

Stop 3: Mall of Mysore (The Retail Laboratory)

Learning Focus: Visual Merchandising, Store Layout, and Customer Service

Next, we headed to the Mall of Mysore, one of the city's premier shopping destinations. For our Retail students, this was their live laboratory.

  • Visual Merchandising (VM): Students observed how window displays are designed to attract customers and how lighting is used to highlight products.

  • Store Layout: They analyzed the floor plans of various anchor stores—how "hot zones" are used for high-value items and how essential items are placed to maximize customer footfall.

  • Customer Experience: Watching real-time interactions between sales staff and customers provided valuable lessons in soft skills, billing operations, and inventory management.

Stop 4: Chamundi Hills (Lunch with a View)

After a morning of heavy learning, we drove up to the spiritual heart of Mysore—Chamundi Hills.

  • Lunch: We settled down for lunch amidst the cool breeze and the panoramic view of Mysore city. It was a moment to relax, discuss the learnings of the morning, and recharge.

  • Culture: A brief visit to the temple allowed students to appreciate the architectural grandeur and cultural significance of the region.

Stop 5: Venugopalswamy Temple, KRS Backwaters

Learning Focus: History, Restoration, and Architecture

Our final stop was the mesmerizing Venugopalswamy Temple located at the KRS Backwaters. This site offered a lesson in history and resilience.

  • Architectural Marvel: Students learned about the incredible restoration of this temple, which was submerged underwater for decades before being relocated stone by stone to the shore.

  • Sunset & Reflection: As the sun set over the calm waters, it provided a serene conclusion to a hectic day. It was a reminder that while we look forward to the future (Automobiles and Retail), we must always respect our past.

9:00 PM: Mission Accomplished

We returned to the Kanakapura college campus by 9:00 PM. Although tired, the students were brimming with new ideas and inspiration.

Conclusion

This field visit was a perfect blend of Technical Education (Payana), Management Studies (Mall of Mysore), and Cultural Values (Temples).

  • For Automobile Students: The day connected the past (Vintage cars) to the future (our college EV lab).

  • For Retail Students: The day transformed abstract concepts of "sales" into a tangible reality of "customer experience."

We thank our Principal, the NSQF Coordinators, and the Management for supporting this initiative. At Govt PU (Ex-Municipal) College, we don't just teach; we explore!
